2009 Junior Civitan International Convention

Hello Everyone!

This is your 2009-2010 Canadian-West Governor, Aliyah Mohamed, giving you a summer update.

Hope everything is well with each and every one of you. So far, my summer has been great; but the weather could be a lot better (too much rain!).

Some highlights...

--Junior Civitan International Convention--

On June 25-27, 2009, I attended the Junior Civitan International Convention in Atlanta , Georgia with Anita, Tracy, Nathan and Katie. It was both informative and a lot of fun.

Each day was filled with a variety of workshops and recreational events. Some workshops I attended were: the "Governor's Job" workshop, the Sno-Do Preparation workshop and a Public Speaking workshop.

Each night was a themed meal and dance; everyone dressed up accordingly. These included the "Mexican Buffet and Hat Dance" and the " Southern Barbeque " meal.

While in Atlanta , there were a lot of attractions to see. The Coca-Cola headquarters, CNN headquarters and the largest aquarium in the world, the Georgia Aquarium, were busy all weekend with visitors!

Some interesting events that occurred while I was at convention included:
-Going to Chick-Fil-A and Fuddruckers - two American restaurants. At Chick-Fil-A, we got the opportunity to sample some new milkshakes and Nathan and I got a free meal for singing "O Canada".
- Jarryd Boyd, the 2009-2010 International President, got to kiss a fish.
- I became part of the Creed Club! (recited the Creed by memory)

Another exciting event that occurred over the course of the Convention was that Nathan Warkentin, from the Nativic of Dundas Junior Civitan Club, became a 2009-2010 International Director. Congratulations Nathan!

At the Awards Banquet, the Canadian-West District won the "Largest Per Capita Foundation Contribution" award and the Nativic of Dundas Junior Civitan Club won Third Place for the "Environmental Project of the Year". Congratulations everyone!

One of the best parts of the Convention was making new friends from all parts of the U.S. and Canada . I strongly encourage each and every one of you to consider going next year. It is an unforgettable experience!

--District Meeting--

There will be a Junior Civitan Board District Meeting in August. The date, location and time are to be announced. It is most likely going to be on Sunday, August 16, so please try to book off that day in advance. Please check your e-mail daily for more information.
